Can Cats eat Scallops?

Can the cat eat scallops or are they harmful to her body? Let’s analyze the pros and cons related to the consumption of this food.

The cat has very specific nutritional needs that are very different from ours. Therefore, when it comes to feline nutrition, there are principles to be strictly adhered to. The introduction of a new food in your diet must always be agreed with the veterinarian, but attention must also be paid to the impromptu administration of foods: not all of them are beneficial for your body. For example, can the cat eat scallops?

Cat scallops yes or no

Everyone knows that cats love fish.

From this data, it is easy to draw the consequence that it is a food particularly suitable for your body. In reality, this is only partially true. The cat, despite having been domesticated by humans millennia ago, was and remains a carnivore: it is a need inscribed in its DNA.

And therefore meat must be the main dish of his menu. If the feline no longer needs to hunt, it is because we hunt for him: his nutritional needs have not changed at all.

We come to the fish however. Undoubtedly, among the foods that can integrate his diet, fish ones have a pre-eminence over all the others.

Obviously, however, before giving a new food to the little feline, it is necessary to find out if it is a food that could be harmful to its health. Therefore, can the cat eat scallops?

The answer is yes; the food is not toxic to your body, and contains healthy substances. First of all, Omega-3, which, as known, improves the condition of the animal’s skin and coat, as well as being a great support for the joints and heart.

There are also countless mineral salts contained in scallops (above all phosphorus, zinc, potassium, iron, selenium, copper and magnesium) without forgetting vitamin B12, essential for cats .

Some useful tips

Even if the cat can eat scallops, this does not translate into an automatic green light for the consumption of the food; there are constraints to be respected, both as regards the measure and as regards the preparation of the food.

Therefore here is a series of tips, which, if implemented, allow the cat to eat scallops, minimizing the disadvantages associated with the consumption of this food.

  • Always cooked: the scallops must always be served to the cat cooked. In fact, raw food contains thiaminase, an enzyme that can be a vehicle for food-borne diseases;
  • No to seasoning: let’s forget fried or seasoned scallops according to our tastes. If we want to serve them to our cat, we must avoid any enrichment, which from the feline point of view is not only superfluous, but even harmful;
  • Snack: in nutrition, timing is everything. Scallops cannot be eaten raw for the reasons set out; but when cooked they lose many of their nutritional qualities. If we were absurdly to feed the scallops (but also other fish) to the cat every day, the cat would soon be suffering from nutritional deficiencies. Therefore the ideal moment is that of the snack; a small piece to taste while waiting for the main meal or as a small prize.
